Prime Picks - Handicapping with Jeff Siegel

Sunday, November 8, 2009 - 00:01
After a glorious two days of an unforgettable series of Breeders’ Cup classics, closing day of 2009 Oak Tree meeting is upon us, and that means a mandatory payout in the Pick-6.

Breeders’ Cup Saturday begins with the Damascus Stakes at seven furlongs and should showcase the short-priced favorite #3 M One Rifle. The Headley-trained gelding was nosed out as an odds-on favorite on Cal Cup day but still earned a career top speed figure in the process and a similar effort today should return him to winning form. If you’re looking for an exacta partner, you might want to consider #7 Viscount, a sharp and improving colt who figures to be running on strongly late as a route-to-sprint play.

The first of two days of Breeders’ Cup action presents a challenging series of six races with plenty of price opportunities and a couple of solid singles within the Pick-6 scheme.

Thursday’s opener is a better than average maiden sprint for older fillies and mares and should be dominated by #2 Gilded Gem and #5 Fund Raiser. A fast working first timer from the Baffert barn, Gilded Gem appears fit and ready and is bred to win early, being by Smarty Jones from the dam of Golden Ballet. Her Baffert barn mate, Fund Raiser, has the benefit of a race over the track and seems sure to move forward, as most Baffert second time starters do.

Wednesday’s program ushers in Breeders’ Cup week and the first race finds the debuting Bob Baffert-trained colt, #5 Onemoreforarch, listed as the 6/5 morning line favorite. The works are okay, nothing special, and while he certainly can win from a lackluster field, there isn’t any value, so we’ll pass the event.

Sunday’s first race has only five entrants and any one of three seems capable of winning it, so we’ll pass the event. #1 Saintly Spirit, popular at the claim box recently, is double jumped in class by Spawr despite being out of jail, always a positive angle from this barn. #3 Lexlenos tries the Pro Ride for the first time and if she can duplicate her turf form on the main track, she’ll be right there. #5 Lullabytime has good recent form, goes for Carava off the claim and retains Bejarano. If you’re playing any rolling exotics I would suggest including all three.
