DEL MAR, Calif. (July 7, 2014) -- For the 15th summer in a row, one of Del Mar’s most popular attractions – “Daybreak at Del Mar” – is back on the agenda for a unique mix of fine breakfast fare and those majestic Thoroughbreds stretching their legs on sun-splashed mornings alongside the Pacific Ocean.
The Saturday and Sunday gatherings, presented at the Clubhouse Terrace Restaurant just past the finish line, run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. throughout the meet, which opens this year on Thursday, July 17.
Regulars to the “Daybreak” mornings know what a delight it is to start their day in the presence of gallopers and workers preparing for upcoming races at the seaside oval. First-timers at the sessions are often in awe of the sights and sounds of the mornings, watching a sun-up ritual that is hundreds of years old unfold as they dine trackside.
Breakfast goers will be able to choose from a delicious and healthy menu assortment available from their servers. Among the items will be fresh-squeezed juice, hot and cold coffees and teas, yogurts, granola bars, fruit cups, fresh local baked goods, cereals and an assortment of hot breakfast sandwiches, made to order. Additionally, there will be a bar serving the Del Mar signature Del Mary, as well as Café Del Cool. A split of champagne also will be available to compliment the fresh-squeezed orange juice.
Jeff Bloom, a former rider who now is a racehorse owner and stable manager, once again will be on hand as emcee for the morning. For better than a decade, Bloom has provided the “Daybreak” crowd with informational tips on the horses out on the track, answered questions about the sport and provided suggestions on how to enjoy a day at the races.
“Daybreak” attendees are encouraged to park in the track’s main lot off Jimmy Durante Blvd. and go through the Clubhouse entrance to the restaurant on the second floor. There is no charge for attending the sessions, but there is a $10 parking fee upon arrival. However, anyone spending $25 or more on breakfast items will have the cost of the parking fee subtracted from their bill.
Del Mar’s 75th summer session runs until Wednesday, September 3. First post most days is 2 p.m. with the exception of Fridays with its 4 p.m. racing start.
