GALT, Calif. (Apr. 10, 2013) -- Monte Melvin Gomes, a member of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association since 1998, passed away in Lodi on April 3, 2013 at the age of 86. Born in Keyes, California on September 20, 1926 to Tony and Rose Gomes. He lived on his ranch outside of Galt with his predeceased beloved wife Susie Mae Gomes for the past 55 years.
He loved his ranch where he was once a dairyman, raised beef cattle and in the later years turned into a horse breeding ranch where he raised Thoroughbred race horses. He was very proud of being an owner trainer and the many winners he had during the 25 years he was in the business.
He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII where he learned his trade as a machine mechanic which he took and worked for over 50 years in a local can plant retiring at the age of 75.
Monte was a loving father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all and was preceded in death by his wife, parents and 9 siblings.
He leaves loving memories to be cherished by his 5 children, Bryant Gomes (Olga) Mariposa, CA, Randy Gomes (Renee) Galt, CA, Sherry Stanley Lodi, CA, Dennis Gomes (Gretchen) Lodi, CA and Debbie Featherston (Terry) Hughson, CA. and leaves a legacy with 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday and the funeral Wednesday.
