Baby Races Start at 4 1/2 Furlongs

ARCADIA, Calif. (Mar. 29, 2013) -- Santa Anita plans to run maiden races for 2-year-olds over 4 1/2 furlongs April 18 and 19. The race on April 18 will be for fillies, while the April 19 race is for open company.

The move to races at 4 1/2 furlongs is a change from the policy of running juvenile races over two furlongs down the straightaway in March and April. The number of those races offered has dwindled in recent seasons.

This year, the races will be for $100,000 claimers who are 2-year-olds by foaling date at the time of entry, April 14. The juveniles must have three workouts, including one at four furlongs, and must have gate approval. The races will be limited to eight starters.
