Following the closure of Hollywood Park, Los Alamitos has played host to up to 700 thoroughbreds year-round. That was two years ago, and officials at Los Alamitos have been struggling to reach an agreement with Santa Anita and the horsemens' associations to continue the pattern. Today, the Daily Racing Form announced that Los Alamitos will host off-track stabling again this year.
The agreement lasts for one year, and while some of the details have yet to be finalized, Los Alamitos will be paid $9,500 a day for the stabling. This compares favorably to the deal from previous years of nearly half that number. California Horse Racing Board chairman Chuck Winner told the Daily Racing Form that the one-year deal will allow the Board “some time to work on a long-term deal.”
Another detail which needs to be worked out is the passage of new legislation to fund shipping to area racetracks, which is done at no cost to horsemen between official off-track stabling venues. The shipping is currently funded by satellite wagering, which has been in decline in recent years.
