Barretts First Del Mar Preview

By Bloodhorse.com
DEL MAR, Calif. (May 28, 2015) -- Six 2-year-olds breezed the fastest furlong in :10 in the first Barretts under-tack preview the company has held at Del Mar Race Course in preparation for its May sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age at the surfside race place May 28.

The sale, which begins at 1 p.m. (PDT) is the first since the California sales company moved its auctions from Pomona to Del Mar.

At Pomona, 2-year-olds breezed on a five-furlong track, while at Del Mar they worked over the mile oval on the new dirt surface. After last year's fall race meet, Del Mar replaced its Polytrack surface with dirt in time for the sale and the upcoming summer race meeting.

"The track worked out better than we could have ever hoped," said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. "It was a safe and consistent track all day long. The horses handled the track very, very well. It played fair to every horse, and every horse had an opportunity to perform."

The six youngsters with the fastest furlong times—four fillies and two colts—came from five different consignments.

Kim McCarthy's McCarthy Bloodstock will offer a colt and filly that clocked in :10 apiece. The colt is Hip 78, a son of Exchange Rate  —Lipstick Sunset, by Maria's Mon, while the filly is Hip 127, a daughter of Broken Vow  —Shoes to Match, by Songandaprayer  .

Songandaprayer is the sire of Becky Thomas' Sequel Bloodstock colt who breezed a furlong in :10. Coming from the supplemental catalog as Hip 155, he is out of the Polish Numbers mare To the Good Times.

Of the three other fillies who went in :10, Bruno DeBerdt's Excel Bloodstock is offering Hip 30, a daughter of Trappe Shot  —Dblsecretprobation, by Proud Citizen  . Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables has Hip 146, a daughter of Hat Trick  —Vicar's Vixen, by Vicar. SBM Training and Sales has consigned Hip 151, a daughter of Desert Party  —Jena Jena, by Dixieland Band.

Twenty-one 2-year-olds previewed a quarter-mile, and of those, Hip 65, named Chicken Hawk, clocked the fastest, :21 1/5. Wavertree is offering the son of J P's Gusto  —Iny Belle, by Lord Carson.

The catalog includes a partial dispersal of horses from the late John and Betty Mabee's Golden Eagle Farm. The Ramona, Calif., farm closed last fall, and Adrian Gonzalez's Checkmate Thoroughbreds is handling the consignment to the May sale. It includes Angel of Luck, a 3-year-old unraced daughter of Lookin At Lucky  —Good News Day, by Pleasant Tap, and seven 2-year-olds by the sires Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Fusaichi Pegasus, Colonel John, and Stormin Fever  .

Many in the catalog are pinhooks from last fall's Keeneland yearling sale. Checkmate is offering the most expensive from that auction, Hip 83, a son of Candy Ride  —Magical Mood, by Forestry. Magical Mood has already produced grade II stakes winner Magical Feeling. The colt was purchased for $250,000 at Keeneland.

Sir Armour is another Keeneland sales graduate. The son of Haynesfield  —Lady Giselle, by Broad Brush, sold there for $160,000. Brocklebank Training & Sales has consigned the colt, Hip 71, as agent for Hathaway Thoroughbreds.

The catalog includes offspring of many major sires, both nationally and among the strong group of California-breds.

McCarthy Bloodstock has the only Street Cry in the sale, Hip 88. The colt is out of the stakes-winning Danehill Dancer mare Maxxi Arte.

Pioneerof the Nile, the sire of this year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Xpressbet.com Preakness (gr. I) winner American Pharoah, has two fillies in the sale. Wavertree has Hip 110, a Pioneerof the Nile filly who is a half sister to stakes winner Appealing Spring, being out of the Wekiva Springs mare Pretty Springs. Martin Valenzuela has the other Pioneerof the Nile filly, Hip 5, named Midday Affair, a daughter of the Mutakddim mare Affair to Remember.

Lucky Pulpit, the California-based sire of California Chrome, who won the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, has two colts and a filly, all Cal-breds, cataloged in the sale. McCarthy has the colts—Hip 76, out of the Larry the Legend mare Legend in Disguise, and Hip 137, out of the Cee's Tizzy mare Sunny Days Ahead. Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency has Miss Hottie, Hip 115, a filly out of the Red Ransom mare Red Hot Girl.

Other stallions represented in the catalog include Afleet Alex, Big Brown, Curlin, Drosselmeyer, Flower Alley, Ghostzapper, Giacomo, Gio Ponti, Harlan's Holiday, Kitten's Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Sky Mesa, Tribal Rule, Speightstown, and Unusual Heat.
